Part 1: Short History of Dr David ‘Melville’ Legge: Founder of the Melville Club

Dr Legge started practising as a village doctor towards the end of the first war. He & his wife devoted themselves to the welfare of Albrighton village for over 50 years. Mrs Legge who was greatly loved, died in 1956.
In the early & mid 1920’s when the Welfare State as we now know it, did not exist, it can be said with truth that Dr, & Mrs Legge ran their own welfare service in the area of Albrighton.
Shortly before the second war Dr Legge & his brothers, Dr Sydney Legge of Shifnal & Mr Grant Legge of Bridgnorth, were instrumental in raising sufficient funds, by voluntary subscription, to build the Hospital in Shifnal, which has now been incorporated into the National Health Service. This was a tremendous achievement at that time.
When Dr, Legge arrived in Albrighton, the population was about 1200. As the village grew in size, he obtained the service of an assistant doctor & gradually grew into a four-doctor team at present incorporated in the National Health Service. His example of service to the community is fortunately still carried on by our team of well-respected doctors.
In a quiet & unobtrusive way, Dr Legge made large gifts for charitable purposes as well as giving help to countless other individuals. Albrighton & surrounding district have every reason to be extremely grateful for the life & service of Dr Legge. He was on the literal sense of the meaning, a Christian Ggntleman.
