The Melville Club: Building Community, Connection, and Care

The Melville Club is more than just a community space for the over-55s—it’s a living legacy of kindness, generosity, and service. Named in honour of Dr David James Melville Legge, the Club stands as a tribute to his unwavering dedication to the people of Albrighton.

A Legacy of Generosity

Dr Legge first came to Albrighton in 1922, setting up his surgery at Cloverleigh on Shaw Lane. Alongside his wife, he established an unofficial welfare service, tirelessly supporting the needs of local families until Mrs Legge’s passing in 1958. Together with his brothers Sydney and Grant—also healthcare professionals—Dr Legge made a profound impact on the region, including raising the funds to build Shifnal Hospital before the Second World War.

In addition to his work as a doctor, Dr Legge made significant charitable contributions to Albrighton. Through his fundraising and quiet acts of generosity, he gifted the land on Station Road where the Melville Club now sits, as well as the site for the 1st Albrighton Scout Group on Shaw Lane.

Dr Legge served the village with grace and dedication for over five decades, leaving behind a community that continues to thrive because of his vision. He passed away in 1974 at the age of 94, but his legacy lives on in the spaces he helped create and the lives he touched.

A Community Hub for the Over-55s

In the spirit of Dr Legge’s generosity, the Melville Club provides a welcoming space where older residents can connect, socialise, and find support. Loneliness and isolation are significant challenges for many in later life, but the Melville Club is here to offer friendship, purpose, and joy.

We’re also here to support carers who may need a moment for themselves. If you care for a loved one, they’re welcome to join our activities while you take time to rest, run errands, or see friends. To discuss care needs, contact Mandy on 07817 417314.
