Transport with the Melville Flyer
Dedicated community transport vehicle for doctors visits, hospital visits, food shopping etc.
At the Melville Club, we are thrilled to provide the Melville Flyer, a vital community minibus service designed to support the residents of Albrighton aged 55 and over. Our mission is simple: to help those who are unable to drive themselves—particularly individuals with mobility challenges—stay connected, independent, and active in the community they love.
Thank you to Jana Bolton for generously donating the funds in order for us to purchase the Melville Flyer.

A Story of Community Spirit
The Melville Flyer was born out of necessity and a strong sense of community. When the council-funded Albrighton Flyer was discontinued, we recognised the impact this would have on residents who relied on it for essential errands and social connections. Determined to fill this gap, the trustees of the Melville Club came together to purchase a minibus, naming it in honour of Dr Melville Legge, whose generous gift of land continues to benefit the village through the Club, the Scouts hut, and the Doctor’s practice on Shaw Lane.

What the Flyer Offers
The Melville Flyer is a lifeline for many. It provides transport for:
- Essential errands: Trips to dentist, doctor, and hospital appointments.
- Shopping trips: Ensuring easy access to groceries and other necessities.
- Social outings: Twice a year, the Flyer takes members on delightful day trips.
The minibus, which was funded through generous donations to the Club, is equipped with a tail lift, making it fully accessible for wheelchair users and individuals with mobility issues.

Affordable and Accessible
To ensure the service remains sustainable, members can access the Flyer for just £6 per year. This small membership fulfils the requirements for Shropshire Council’s grant support.
Average Costs
We want to keep costs affordable for transport, so here are some average costs for regular trips:
- £2 each way to Albrighton Medical Practice
- £10 each way to Princess Royal Hospital (Telford) or New Cross Hospital (Wolverhampton)
A Service That Changes Lives
The Flyer isn’t just about transport; it’s about enabling older residents to stay in their homes longer, maintain their independence, and remain active in the community. It ensures that vital appointments and errands are manageable, and it creates opportunities for social interaction, such as our Wednesday Lunch meetups, which helps 20+ members each week attend who wouldn’t otherwise be able to do so. Our Wednesday Lunch meetups are attended by more than 80 people from throughout Albrighton and the surrounding hamlets and is our most popular weekly event.
We are incredibly proud to see the difference this service makes in the lives of our members, helping them stay connected and supported.
